Having a video camera in class will be an effective powerful way for students to view their group work conversations. In today's world the students use their cameras for being silly and making each other laugh. In class the students will use the video camera to seriously view themselves collaborating in groups. Kids these days love to be on camera! This filmimg will be used as teachable moments. Students will watch to see that they are focused and contributing to their group. They will learn how to discuss academic subjects and work to learn how to give constructive criticism as well as take criticism. I will be able to pull students in groups and teach them through concrete visual examples how to become effective speakers and listeners with the video playback. The idea came form a book I am reading called Notice and Note by Beers and Probst. There are many techniques I have learned to implement with the students while reading their text. This high interest way of teaching the students will most definitely carry over into further years of their education. The ability to film themselves for silliness is always there but the lessons learned from self-reflecting and learning to effectively communicate in my eyes, is invaluable.
