Our Language Arts department has adopted independent choice reading to our curriculum. Teachers have been building classroom libraries that include a wide variety of titles and genres as a way to increase student motivation, comprehension, stamina, and fluency. I have had much success with our new reading initiative which is also combined with student/teacher conferences in which we discuss the books being read. Access to books is the most important factor to develop and cultivate a student's love for reading. To continue with our school's initiative of independent reading, I have planned a Book Club unit that will coincide with our study of The Diary of Anne Frank and the Holocaust. After I have previewed each of the six titles, students will be given the opportunity to rank their top three choices. I will then arrange groups into clubs where they will discuss and analyze the book. Students will also create their own calendar for assigned reading as well as determine the focus of each weekly meeting. The Book Club model supports not only our independent reading program, but it also continues to enrich student choice and flexibilty in their learning. However, with recent cuts to our district's budget, I am not able to have these book purchased through my department. Reading fosters a sense of empathy for those lost in the pages of a book. These titles expose students to a time in history that they have trouble grasping. Each book will provide the young adult with a window into a time period that should never be repeated again.
