Funded Mar 29, 2017Having a student laptop in my room has helped increase learning. Students can access instructional videos for themselves or they can be projected for the entire class. It is connected to a printer in class so students can even print homework for their other classes. It has added many wonderful lessons and discussions. Even a TA was able to use it to study for and take her math placement exam, which she got a perfect score on and was able to take the class she wanted. Thank you so much for this great addition to my class.”

Funded Oct 16, 2016My students and I are so grateful for your generosity. We use our graphing calculators almost every day. My students are really getting used to "using appropriate tools strategically" which is one of the new common core Math Practice Standards.
My precalculus students have recently been using the graphing calculators to graph transformations of trigonometric functions. The transformations are so much more visible when the graph output is in full color LCD. They are also able to double check and build their own hand graphing skills also. There is so much more to come, we are starting trig identities very soon!
My algebra 2 students have been using the new calculators to help with polynomial functions that are very difficult to precisely graph by hand. They learned to find the max and mun, intercepts and discuss end behavior in one lesson using the features of these calculators. It is so exciting to see them engaged and excited about polynomials.
My students are also allowed to check calculators out for the weekend if they need to one for SATs or college entrance exams and I know they and their families are very grateful to have that as an option, thanks to you.”

Transforming Transformations - Graphing Calculators
Funded Oct 18, 2014My students are so grateful for your generosity. We use our graphing calculators almost every day. My students are really getting used to "using appropriate tools strategically" and it is very nice that they do not all have to share. My precalculus students have used them to graph parent functions and create a parent functions project where they had to identify all the simplest forms of the 9 functions in their function "toolbox" and identify the intercepts (If any) and domain and range of each function. Then we moved on to piecewise functions. I was thrilled to be able to use the curriculum my school invested in for piecewise functions. You see, my school purchased a top of the line common core curriculum which assumes we have access to graphing calculators. Until now, I have had to skip these lessons and supplement with lessons we can do by hand or with simple calculators. They were able to graph the piece wise functions on the calculator, and determine if they are continuous or discontinuous anywhere in an instant. They are also able to double check their own hand graphing skills. There is so much more to come, we are starting function transformations next week!!
My algebra 2 students have been able to graph systems of equations and inequalities using the graphing calculators. Again, using the same new common core curriculum. It is so exciting to see them engaged and excited about graphing and solving systems of equations and inequalities. We just started a new unit and we'll be able to write a program for the quadratic equation into the calculators, they'll be so excited.
My favorite use so far has been a very special student who needed a graphing calculator to take the SAT's. Her family is very poor and do not have the means to purchase one for her. She is very bright and has a very promising future. She borrowed one of the calculators you so generously purchased for them and said she did very well on the math portion, thanks you she will likely get a scholarship to anywhere she wants to go and make great contributions to our country.”
