Effective note-taking, especially in math class, was never taught in school when I argue that it should be because it's one of the important skills we can teach our kids. Effective note-taking skills in math class help students process abstract theorem and ideas in their own words. It also allows them to keep track of their thinking process as they work out problems and concepts. Most importantly, a student can use notes to review and reflect, allowing them to know that math can be fun when they have given the resources to understand it. I use interactive notebooks in my Algebra 1 classes this past term and my students appreciated it very much. They would take it out and flip it through their notes furiously during every exam. I guide my students through the note-taking process by asking them to summarize, to generalize, to give an example, etc. after each lesson. This means their notes are very personalized to their own learning, but still structured enough to guide them. I can proudly say that after a term of doing notes together with them, my students would walk out of my class knowing how to take notes in math class so that it will benefit their learning.
