  • The "Peaceful Patio"- an Alternative to Regular Recess

    Funded Jun 5, 2018

I just want to update everyone who donated to the Peaceful Patio and let you know that it has been a great success. All the items have been put to good use, especially the clipboards for our resident artists and the foamy kneepads for kiddos who like to get down on the ground while they build their LEGO and magnet creations.

Far and away the most popular items have been the marble works sets, which are played with every single day. They are successful because kids work together to build their marble tower, and then take great delight in "racing" their marbles to the finish. They also enjoy the challenge of trying to build the highest tower or make their tower as tall as our tent canopy.

Thanks again for seeing the value in this project, and know that it has made a lot a children very happy at recess. I've overheard many kids say things like, "I love coming to the Peaceful Patio," and "The Peaceful Patio is way better than regular recess."”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Measham

  • Alternative Recess-The Peaceful Patio

    Funded May 13, 2018

I'm happy to report that the Peaceful Patio is up and running at my school, and it's a huge success. I have received lots of positive feedback from teachers and parents, saying that they truly appreciate having an alternative option for kids who are struggling at recess. The students also tell me every day that they are so happy to come to the peaceful patio, and it's not uncommon for me to overhear comments like, "I love coming here. Please keep it open all year," or "I told my teacher I want to come here everyday."

The picnic tables are great, and the kids cozy up together to play games, trade Pokémon cards, and create simple art projects. The rolling cart and cover have made it super easy for me to transport toys and supplies out to the patio each day, and then roll them back inside and cover them up.

Thank-you so much for supporting this project. It's been very rewarding for me as an educator to meet the needs of the children at my school.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Measham

  • The Peaceful Patio-A Calm Place to Play, Rain or Shine

    Funded Sep 12, 2018

I am happy to report that the Peaceful Patio is now up and running at my school. I supervise this alternate recess during Monday, Wednesday and Friday lunch recesses from 12:20-1:50pm, and so far it has been very popular, especially with the 4th and 5th graders. On sunny days they are happy to have shade, and on the rainy days they are happy to bunker down under the canopies to play games, trade Pokémon cards or create simple art projects.

I'm starting to recognize which kids are my "frequent fliers" and its not uncommon for me to overhear comments such as, "I wish the Peaceful Patio was open everyday" or "The Peaceful Patio is way more fun than playing in the pouring rain."

I have just recruited my first parent volunteer (who is earning her MA in counseling), and she is going to join us on Wednesdays to do some special projects with the kids. It's my hope that more parents will follow her lead, and volunteer their time to help kids feel successful at recess.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Measham

My project is all about creating a calm and peaceful alternative to your typical outdoor-playground recess. As a school counselor, I have come across many children who find recess stressful for one reason or another. Perhaps they have sensory issues, social anxiety, or trouble making or keeping friends. Maybe they have an injury, such as a broken ankle and can't run and play for a few weeks. Whatever the reason, they dread going to recess because they often feel left out, lonely, or misunderstood by others. Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a safe and peaceful place that supported the social and emotional growth of these sensitive children? A place where they could play board games, build with Lego, read books, tend to a garden or just check-in with a caring adult. A place where kids can take a break from tag, soccer and other competitive games. A place with fewer students, and a lower level of stimulation, so that easily overwhelmed kids can recharge, and come back to class with a calm body and brain. This peaceful patio needs 2 sturdy, weather-proof picnic tables for the kids to gather around and play games. It also needs a storage cart to hold Lego, games, books and gardening equipment, and a cover to protect it from the elements. I'm so excited to launch this project and make a difference for kids who struggle to be successful at recess. Thank-you for considering my request.
