For many of my students, being at school is the safest place to be. A lot of them come from broken homes in an area riddled with gang violence, substance abuse, and poverty. They don't have much to call their own, but their school, classroom and supplies are things they can call theirs. Our school is a Title I school in an area of that suffers from crime and violence. I have had students bring me bullets found on the fields in our school yard, tell me stories of their fathers throwing their mothers across the room, and sleeping on a mattress on the floor with 5 other people. It's heart-wrenching. I'm grateful that our school and my classroom are places where these kids feel free to be kids, love learning and enjoying being there. They work hard and are often times left unrecognized because they haven't reached the levels that they "should be at" but their growth never ceases to amaze me.
