Bring the World to My Students!
Funded Dec 12, 2011I wish I could invite each of you to our classroom to witness first-hand the impact you've had on the students' learning! (As well as to see the smiles of wonder and gratitude on the kids' faces, and to give them the opportunity to meet the people who have shown our class such support and generosity.)
But alas, the photographs and my words will have to suffice.
We have used listening center and bookbinding kit to bring joy and pride to our learning process, and has allowed me to infuse my lessons with artistic and expressive outlets for my students. The listening center has given us access to the work of Victor Hugo, via the Broadway production's soundtrack from Les Miserables. We have also brought life to poetry, by recognizing it first in the lyrics of our favorite songs. The English Language Learners in my class have been able to work on their pronunciation, using language practice technology, and several gifted learners have used the listening station to access texts that are several levels beyond their current reading abilities.
Most fabulously, our class has written wonderful stories, and then "published" them using the bookbinding machine your donations gave us. What a way to value their work! The photos I posted feature the students at work and at play, but always enthusiastically learning; I hope the looks on their faces bring you as much joy as your generous donation has brought to our class.
Thank you so much, on behalf of each of my 29 current students and countless future ones, for making such a meaningful difference in our lives.”

Sometimes Low-Tech is the Best Way to Learn!

We have used the sets of colorful, fun, and tactile Cuisenaire rods to explore concepts in number sense, place value, fractions, decimals, geometry, algebra, and patterns. My students have excitedly investigated mathematical concepts in a manner that feels closer to play than work. Additionally, your gifts have brought actual play into the classroom with Friday afternoon math and word-play games, using the foam dice and thesaurus we received.

My Bilingual Students Need More, But They Have So Much Less!
Funded Jan 31, 2011I wish I could invite each of you to our classroom to witness first-hand the impact you've had on the students' learning! We have used the document camera, along with a borrowed projector, to project single copies of stories in Spanish, so that the whole class was able to read along. We have used the ELMO to have students share bar graphs and pictographs they made as part of an in-class project; by allowing the students access to the document camera during that project, I was able to empower them to lead class discussions and learn from each other. Finally, I also used our new equipment to allow the students to explore and experiment with light and color in an interdisciplinary science/art inquiry-based project. A few of the photos I posted, feature the students during this last example; I hope the looks on their faces bring you as much joy as your generous donation has brought to our class.
Thank you so much, on behalf of each of my 34 current students and countless future ones, for making such a meaningful difference in our lives”
With gratitude,
