Diving Into Ancient History!
Funded Oct 25, 2022Thanks to your support, Deaf/ Hard of Hearing students were able to take a deep
dive into Social Studies and explore ancient civilizations! Our students were able to analyze various texts using fun and diverse modes of learning. They were able to create presentations using the materials and resources that you helped us acquire. The best part of the resources were the visuals, images, and manipulatives that engaged every student regardless of abilities. Each and every student engaged with the resources, made meaningful connections, and put forth their best work using the resources from your donations thanks to you!! We are forever grateful for your generosity!”

Thieves, Gods, and Theater, Oh My!
Funded Oct 23, 2020My students are so grateful for their new books. These books provided them with access to ancient Greek culture, opportunities to obtain information from multiple resources and truly dive deep into the subject. They have learned so much about ancient Greek culture, religion, government, trade, agriculture and continue to learn more. The text is child-friendly and meets the diverse needs of my special needs students. The visuals in the text provided them with multi modal access to text that they have never experienced or learned about. Due to their hearing loss, my students require language rich environments, constant access to new vocabulary, and visuals to encourage connections to the text which was available in the books we have acquired with your help!
As we continue to read The Lightning Thief, the students have acquired the background knowledge necessary to understand the setting and events of the text. They have enjoyed learning a new culture and the stories of the gods. When reading The Lightning Thief, they are immersed in language play and volunteer to read out loud to their classmates. Some students use their preferred language of American Sign Language to read to their classmates which really brings us together and provides us with an acceptance of our educational and communication choices. They especially like it when I read aloud (because of my attempts to be theatrical and change my voice). My students are particularly enjoying the graphic novel as it provides them with the pictures which helps them visualize the story. The students in the class are being introduced to typical teenage emotions, relatable character traits, and real life social experiences while diving into a fictional text with a captivating story.
In addition to the novel, the students have especially been enthralled with learning about the gods and the purposes they served. It has been intriguing and exciting teaching them about the responsibilities the gods have, the explanations for nature, weather and disasters that occur and how the gods relate to the world in the time of the ancient Greeks. In our current virtual/ remote setting, these books have motivated the students to attend and become immersed in the world of Greece. Once again, please accept my deepest gratitude for your generosity. You made it happen!”
