Literacy Matters!
Funded Nov 12, 2024Receiving the book donations of "Night" by Elie Wiesel has had a significant impact on my students' reading skills and overall educational development. Access to a diverse range of books allows students to explore different genres, expand their vocabulary, and improve their comprehension abilities. With books that are engaging and age-appropriate, students are more likely to develop a love for reading, which directly influences their academic performance. The increased exposure to various writing styles and topics helps them to better grasp complex ideas, enhancing both their literacy and critical thinking skills. For many of my students, this book donation provides an opportunity to practice reading outside of school hours, which reinforces the learning they receive in the classroom.
Some reading skills my scholars learned from "Night" were characterization and theme/central idea, and citing textual evidence. In my class, scholars close-read and annotate silently using graphic organizers to help them to better grasp key ideas and concepts. Students must answer text-dependent questions and cite text evidence to support their answers. We also engage in scholarly discussions about the text.
Moreover, these donations positively influence students' lives by providing them with a sense of empowerment and opportunity. Many students, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, may not have access to books at home due to financial constraints. Receiving books not only helps bridge this gap but also boosts self-confidence. With a steady supply of new materials, students feel motivated to engage with their education more deeply, leading to improved academic outcomes. Additionally, the availability of books fosters creativity and imagination, allowing students to dream bigger and see the world beyond their immediate surroundings. In the long run, this access to reading materials can have a profound impact on their personal growth and future success.”
With gratitude,
