McKee's Snacking Seagulls
Funded Sep 20, 2022Thank you so much for your generous donations. McKee is comprised of low-income students and so your donation goes a long way to students in need. We have successfully created an atmosphere that feels like a home away from home. What better to empower our students with feeling this way, than providing some snacks and beverages during after school activities? From art club, to gaming club, to boxing and more, our building is busy each day with after school activities to help our students engage in the McKee community and strengthen relationships. Since clubs have started I have been lucky enough to provide many students with the snacks and beverages your gracious donations provided us with. Thank you for the bottom of our hearts (and full bellies, haha)!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Dedja
This classroom project was brought to life by The DonorsChoose Community and 11 other donors. To Google or Not to Google: That is the Question!
Funded Nov 20, 2018First, I would like to thank you on behalf of my students and I for the generous donation. You are the reason we are able to achieve technological success in English class everyday. From writing essays in practice for the NYS Regents Exam, to practicing for the SAT on Khan Academy to now beginning to write college essays and create resumes, my students are set up for success for life after high school--and they are only in the eleventh grade! I cannot tell you how much this means to my class or how much happier my students have been. I am able to give them real life feedback on Google Classroom, a digital resource in which my students and I can communicate and help each other learn and grow with the use of technology. Yes, we meet each day to learn, but we are able to do so now with the addition of technology. It is literally at my students' fingertips!
Thanks to your thoughtful donation, we received 5 HP Chromebooks to use in the classroom daily. In a society in which the youth are so used to technology, you would be surprised at how happy and new this feeling of using technology in the classroom for educational benefits is to my students. What excites my students most is really being able to interact with each other via Google Documents on our Google Classroom. For those that are unsure as to how Google Documents functions, it is much like writing in a notebook or typing up notes on a typewriter. Just pretend your notebook was on the computer! My students have typed essays in preparation for the regents and will begin writing college essays and the beauty of it is that they are able to share their document digitally (much like passing their notebook over to a peer) for real-time feedback. The student giving the feedback can do so much as comment, suggest, or make corrections in live time for the other student to see. This resource works best on the HP Chromebooks because Chromebooks are Google-friendly! The students are helping each other become better writers and are becoming more in tune with technology as they do so--a skill they need for life beyond high school!
Many of the students enjoy the laptops and working collaboratively in groups to complete tasks. Aside from essays, students often work in groups to peruse resources, practice for the SAT, access the digital library, watch educational videos and more. Although we pack up our book bags when the bell rings and get to the next class, the students' work is now not just printed in front of them but digitalized and can be accessed at any time. The best part of it all is seeing my students excited to learn and work on whatever the day's lesson is TOGETHER. Period 6/7 cannot thank you enough for being a part of our learning!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Dedja
