I once heard one of my students complain that in the classroom library there weren't any "good" books. I challenged him to read the first chapter of a book I new was great. The next day he had finished the entire book and wanted to know if there were anymore like it. In my class students are now diving into books and enjoying what they read. When I read their weekly letters they are building connections with characters and making predictions and inferences. They like to ask characters questions and even give the character advice. Our school is currently a magnet for action based learning. Students love to walk around the room with their favorite book and some even like getting on the elliptical while laughing at what their characters are doing and saying in the story. After reading they are racing me to the carpet in hopes to share their thinking with their partners. They enjoy learning about new authors and the many awards that those authors receive for their books.
