  • Fun Food Friday

    Funded Oct 8, 2022

Fun Food Fridays are awesome! So far we have had egg salad sandwiches with the eggs from our hens and saimin with the kale from the garden. Soon we will be able to have dishes made with chicken broth from the chickens we raise and smoke meat and sausage with a pig we caught in our trap. Our students are very knowledgeable about living off the land, and we teach each other what we know so we can all benefit. We are having a blast in class and we thank you for giving us the supplies we need to do what we do! We appreciate you!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tina Alcain

  • Up, Up We Grow!

    Funded Sep 20, 2022

We are excited to get these cattle panel trellises covered with pumpkins, cucumbers and green beans so we can walk in the trellis tunnel and pretend we are in a fairy garden and not have to worry about the outside world. We constructed the trellis arch and got the raised beds put together. Now we just have to cut the grass and fill the beds. Once we get the beds placed where we want them we will fill them with all kinds of vining crops that will hopefully cover the trellis and have the fruits and vegetables hang down for easy harvesting. Thanks so much again for your generous donations that allow us to do these awesome projects! We really appreciate it!”

  • Breathing Healthy and Keeping Hydrated

    Funded Aug 16, 2022

The diffusor we have to use the essential oils makes our classroom smell like the doctors office! The kids are always asking what the nice smell is. I think it gives everyone a sense of calm as well when we are sitting in the classroom cooling down after we work outside in the hot sun. The Gatorade powder is a crowd pleaser and is helping us to not get dehydrated from the hot sun. We go through a lot of water when it's hot, and it's been so hot lately! The water cooler we got a few projects ago is one of the best things ever for our classroom. Thanks again for supporting us and helping us get things for our classroom that makes our lives easier and more enjoyable!”

  • Pop-up Potting Shed

    Funded Aug 7, 2022

The students have been diligently planting seeds so that we have lots of seedlings to plant into our raised beds. They have planted everything from beans to cucumbers to beets. And of course sunflowers! We can't wait until everything starts sprouting and getting large enough to replant so that we can get them into the ground. Our garden has so many beds to plant in and once everything gets growing we are going to be able to produce so much food! I hope the kids like trying new things to eat because we are going to have lots of lunches made from plants!”

  • More Tools = More Work

    Funded Aug 9, 2022

We are in our third week of school and the students have already been hard at work outside in the garden. We have cleared all the raised beds, put together and filled additional raised beds, built a new compost bin, and put up a trellis tunnel that we will hopefully get squash and pumpkins to grow on. It's going to be cool to see once we get the vines to grow over it into a tunnel. The students kept asking who we were making the wedding arch for. Thank you again for supporting our classroom and for helping us get supplies we use all the time. It's always nice to have tools at our disposal and not have to wait to finish a project because we don't have all the supplies. Mahalo again for your support and generosity!”

  • We Always Need More Tools

    Funded Aug 8, 2022

The school year is starting off awesome! We are already working hard doing a bunch of different projects around the farm, and these tools are coming in very handy! We have built and filled a bunch of new raised beds and are almost ready to plant! We can't wait to see what grows well this year and what we can harvest to learn how to prepare and Cook. My students are loving being outside and not cooped up in the classroom. We can't wait to use more tools to get more areas maintained and beautiful. Thank you again for your generosity and for supporting our classroom! Mahalo!”

  • More Garden Supplies

    Funded Aug 28, 2022

Our garden is coming along awesome! We put together the big box raised bed to put our mamaki plants in because they weren't doing well in the ground. I hope they are fed better in the raised bed because the soil is softer. We also used the staple gun to put up a new compost bin liner. We are hoping it gets filled up fast! Thank you for helping us get the supplies we need to learn new things in the garden and in turn make our garden look awesome! We appreciate your generosity and hope you continue to follow along with our garden journey!”

  • Food Preservation 101

    Funded Jul 15, 2022

Food preservation is something I really enjoy teaching my students. If we don't have electricity for the ice box and freezer at home we're screwed. Teaching them how to preserve food in other ways is very helpful in case anything should happen to our food supply. We just have to figure out how we can produce a whole lot of vegetables at one time so we can put them up for a later time. Mahalo for helping us get the supplies we need to learn to preserve our food and also for allowing us to learn things outside of the traditional box. We really appreciate your generosity!”

  • We Need Wire & New Beds!

    Funded Aug 15, 2022

We are slowly getting the space for our new beds cleared and also the area that we will use the new wire for. We will also be using some of the wire to repair the chicken coops so they are not rusting from the salt air. We are more than 1500 feet above sea level and the salt still corrodes everything metal on the farm. Thank you for supporting our classroom and helping us get more supplies we need to do awesome projects! We can't wait to get our hands dirty in the dirt and grow all the things we want to eat! Mahalo again for your generosity!”

  • More Planting Space Needed

    Funded Aug 6, 2022

Thank you so much for helping us get more raised beds for our garden space. We cleared out the space that had the raised beds from last year and put these new ones in because the rectangular ones are not as good as the oval ones. We emptied and sifted the dirt in the old beds and filled the new ones with leaves and stick before we put the sifted dirt into the new beds. They are a little smaller than the old ones, but that just means we need to get more beds!

Thank you for always supporting our classroom and helping us get the supplies we need to have these fun projects on the farm! We really appreciate it!”

Agriculture has been a part of my life for many years. I am the fifth generation to live and farm on our coffee and macadamia nut homestead. My lifelong dream to be the Agriculture teacher at the high school I attended has finally come true. I have made it through my first year and I think it was a raging success. There are so many ideas bouncing around in my head and I hope I will be able to bring them to fruition.
