  • Let's Plant More Tea!

    Funded May 11, 2023

Next school year we are wanting to expand our mamaki area so that we can provide dried leaves for tea to our school and community. We have a partnership with a local grocery store to sell the tea for our program and we use that to buy more supplies we need in class. We will also be trying to incorporate more business lessons within our everyday jobs on the farm so that the students learn a more well-rounded approach to what they do in class. Mahalo for your support of our classroom and for helping us get these supplies that will enable us to succeed at being more sustainable and stronger stewards of this land.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tina Alcain

  • Grind That Meat!

    Funded May 2, 2023

We have lots of hunters in class, so I already asked them to share some of their catch with us when they can so we can have it in the freezer, ready for when school starts again in August. We would like to be able to do some jerky in the dehydrator and different kinds of sausage we can try to use in different recipes. Thank you for helping us to get the equipment we need to learn how to do these different techniques to preserve food. We are probably not going to smoke the sausage, but that can always be another DC project for the future. Mahalo again for supporting us and sharing your generosity with our classroom!”

  • Keep on Organizing!

    Funded Apr 12, 2023

With all the stuff we keep getting from DonorsChoose, being able to organize it and find a place for it has become top priority. We have been trying to organize our classroom supplies all year, but we have so much stuff so it's taking a while. These new drawer bins are much easier to use than the plastic containers with the lids. Eventually we will have more of these drawer bins to put on the shelves so that everything will have a place. And the label maker is so fun to use and we have been trying to label everything! Thank you for helping us to get all these fun supplies for our classroom and for giving us the opportunity to try new things and learn outside the traditional box. Mahalo!”

  • Books & Eggs for Everyone!

    Funded Mar 30, 2023

We have a surplus of eggs that we can't sell, mostly because they are cracked or extra dirty or just not fit for sale to the teachers. These cookbooks and egg cookers will come in so handy for using up those extra eggs! We made egg salad sandwiches and will do deviled eggs next week. We can't wait to try some of the other recipes in the cookbooks. We also feed scrambled eggs to our chickens and ducks to increase their protein intake and make their eggshells stronger and their bodies healthier. Thank you again for helping us get the supplies we need to do fun stuff in class!”

  • Kill Those Pesky Weeds!

    Funded Apr 21, 2023

We can't wait to burn everything on the farm so they can't grow back! We have tried hand weeding, weed barrier, gravel and mulch, but the weeds still find a way to grow back. We had a weed burner that we got from DC a while back, but it wasn't very good and would shoot flames from places that wasn't supposed to have flames, so we got rid of it...too dangerous. These weed burners are much higher quality and burn the weeds great! It's a little dangerous to have open flames, but the right students do the job well and we are getting one step closer to having no weeds in the garden! Thank you again for all your support!”

  • Odds and Ends for the Farm

    Funded Apr 7, 2023

Everyday is something different on the farm and we wouldn't have it any other way. Having all the tools we need in class helps when we encounter setbacks or something that needs fixing. On any given day we could play the roles of mechanic, vegetable farmer, veterinarian and carpenter. With these tools that you help to supply, we have what we need to do what we have to in order for the farm to run smoothly. Sometimes we still find ourselves in a bind, but we usually have someone to call to help us get out. Thank you again for helping us to make our class so fun and exciting!”

  • Mango Sticky Rice

    Funded Mar 14, 2023

Mangoes are very common in Hawaii, but good mangoes are hard to come by. Thai restaurants are pretty common, and mango sticky rice can be found at any good farmers market. We want to try and make our own mango sticky rice but we have to find some good mangoes. The one's at COSTCO are pretty junk. Thank you for always helping my class get the supplies we need to be able to do all these fun activities in class. My students always say we cook more than the Culinary class on campus does. I told them be thankful for DonorsChoose for making that happen! Mahalo so very much!”

  • Let's Label and Organize for Days!

    Funded Apr 11, 2023

This label maker is awesome! There are already 50 labels on stuff all over the classroom and much more to still be labeled and organized. I will be changing out some of the plastic bins that I had for stuff and using the new one's we got from Quill. I am hoping since those have drawers that they will be easier to use for all of our random supplies we have in class.

Thank you for helping us to get these supplies that just make our classroom life that much easier to deal with and give us ways to put everything in it's place. We appreciate your generosity towards our classroom and hope you follow along with us to see what fun thing we have planned for the future. Mahalo!”

  • Read, Read & Read Some More!

    Funded Mar 29, 2023

Thank you so much for helping us get all these awesome books to add to our classroom library. We love to pick out topics from different books and apply it to what we are doing in the garden. We do weekly assignments on various topics in class, and having these books to use as reference really comes in handy, because I don't have to just rely on Google for information. There's just something about reading a book versus an eBook, and I really love to just look at pictures sometimes. There really is a book for everything and these books are helping to add to our library so we can have everything we need to learn how to care for our farm and livestock properly. The cookbooks will be awesome when we have a surplus of eggs and we need something for Fun Food Fridays! Mahalo again!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tina Alcain

  • Poultry Plucking Party

    Funded Mar 2, 2023

We have been harvesting our poultry for a while now, but this new plucker will make our job much easier and cleaner. Our old plucking machine was a table top one and would splash all over when we use it. This one is much less splashing for sure! We appreciate your generosity towards our classroom and for helping us get these "out-of-the-box" supplies and equipment that's not usually found in most other classes. We sure do have fun when we have activities and these supplies make our jobs much easier. Mahalo again!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tina Alcain

Agriculture has been a part of my life for many years. I am the fifth generation to live and farm on our coffee and macadamia nut homestead. My lifelong dream to be the Agriculture teacher at the high school I attended has finally come true. I have made it through my first year and I think it was a raging success. There are so many ideas bouncing around in my head and I hope I will be able to bring them to fruition.
