Sensory & De-escalation Room for Students With Special Needs
Funded Sep 29, 2022The Sensory/De-escalation Room is a school-wide, kid-friendly, and calming space for students to reset and take needed breaks to return to the learning environment ready to learn.
Our school has many students that have a multitude of social/emotional difficulties as well as learning. Our school also has had many students from families seeking asylum from other countries arrive this school year. These children have presented with many social and emotional issues. For many of these students, a classroom is frustrating because they don't speak English as their first language. The sensory room has become a place for students and teachers to calm themselves and prepare them for the school day.
Many teachers have spoken to me about how much their students love the room and the positive impact that it has had on the children and the daily classroom routines. When the students entered the Sensory Room and saw all the materials, they were excited to try everything! They have enjoyed using the tube lights, fluorescent light covers, star projector, and essential oil diffuser because it has created a calming environment. The building block wall, wall light panels, and stress balls have provided our students with different ways to tap into their multi-sensory needs.
P.S. 63Q, thanks you very much for your support in this project. We look forward to helping our students calm themselves when the stress overwhelms them.”

Mrs. Hughes

Funded Jun 13, 2017Thank you again for your generous donation. Your donations allowed my students and me to get the laser printer we needed so desperately. I am now able to print out the worksheets and materials that not only aide in, but also enrich my students learning.
My students were so excited to be able to print out their first writing pieces this month. Some of my students we able to publish their writing using our classroom computer and then printed it out on our brand new printer.
A few of my students have difficulty writing neatly because of muscle weakness in their hands. As a result, they often don't like they way their writing looks. Being able to print out their writing pieces made them feel proud of their work. Thank you very much for your generosity, it is so greatly appreciated.”

Focus on Flexible Seating!
Funded Mar 2, 2017My students and I have benefited greatly from the materials that this project provided. Because of your generous donations we were able to receive the Bouncy Bands, Balance Cushions and pencil grips that some of my students desperately needed. My co-teacher and I placed Bouncy Bands on six of our students' desks. These children can be restless at times and this has helped them to be better able to stay seated for longer periods of time. They are able to bounce their feet on the bands when they feel the need to get up. The Balance Cushions were given to five of our students. The children state that sitting on them is not only more comfortable, but they are also able to stay focused for longer periods of time. The pencil grips are helping out two of my students who receive occupational therapy. Their handwriting has greatly improved because they are able to hold the pencil correctly.
When the materials arrived, my students were so excited to see what was in the boxes. When we unpacked them they all started jumping and cheering. Like a child on Christmas morning, they all wanted to use everything and couldn't wait to try them out. My co-teacher and I explained what each of the items were and what it was used for.
We thank you again from the bottoms of our hearts. We are finishing up a wonderful school year. I look forward to using these materials with next year's group of energetic and enthusiastic third graders.”

Making Math Matter!
Funded Mar 29, 2010I can't fully express the gratitude that my students and I feel because of your generosity. The math materials that you have so generously provided for my students have made them look forward to our math block. The look on their faces when I opened the box containing these materials was priceless. They couldn't wait to start using everything! We have begun to use a few of the donated items and plan to use a few more before the school year comes to an end.
We have used the dry erase graph boards to create bar graphs using classroom data such as "Favorite TV Show" and "Favorite Favor Ice Cream." The children love using the big dice that we received to play "Multiplication Baseball," a game in which one child rolls the dice (pitches) and another child solves the multiplication fact (bats). The big dice make the game more enjoyable and they are easier for my students to read.
I have always given my students a math problem of the day to start the day. Now I am able to use the "Overhead Problem of the Day Cards" to give them more challenging problems that focus on many different skills. I am also now able to display class graphs in my classroom thanks to the chart size graph paper included in the materials you so generously donated.
My students and I thank you very much. You have truly done a wonderful thing for my classroom. The materials that you funded will continue to help my future students become stronger math students. ”

Funded Sep 23, 2009I can't fully express my joy, excitement, and thanks for your donation to my project. It is great to see that you share my vision for reaching children. Your donation has made it possible to incorporate these tools to further my students' understanding. My students love our new overhead projector because they can all see the material that I am using for a lesson clearly.
I am now able to demonstrate complete and thoughtful responses to questions that my students may see on their New York State exams. The cart that you so graciously donated is a perfect addition to our classroom. I am able to access the overhead projector very easily. We also have a great place to store text book and supplies on the useful cart!
Thank you again for your incredible generosity. My students and I have truly can "see the light" this year.”

Funded Aug 15, 2009My students and I cannot find the words that properly express the gratitude that we feel because of your generosity! Your donations have made it possible for my students to have a comfortable place to sit during our classroom discussions and reading time.
The beautiful rug that you kindly gave to our classroom, not only makes the classroom look so much brighter and inviting, but the students also are now able to sit longer without the constant distraction of being uncomfortable on the hard, cold floor. My students also enjoy using the rug during independent reading time and for buddy reading. It provides them with the perfect space to sit with a good book.
We also have used it during our Geography lessons. My students love the fact that our rug has the continents, oceans, and flag of specific countries on it. I occasionally find the students checking out the different flags and then trying to find the county in which it is from. We absolutely love our new rug! We will make sure to take really good care of it. Thank you again for your kindness and generosity. We really appreciate it!”
