  • Brand New Books for My Superb Scientists

    Funded Jan 23, 2021

Thank you SO much for your generous donation to my project. I am constantly looking for opportunities to expose my scholars to more non-fiction science texts that are on their level. Reading and comprehending scientific texts is a skill that scholars must practice as they learn how to think like scientists.

We use these books to supplement our lessons, and scholars are also encouraged to read the books during their free time to complete book reports for extra credit. They love seeing how the concepts we learn in class are connected to the real world all around them.

Thanks, again, for adding in a positive way to our classroom. These books will be sure to reach and impact scholars for many years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Thompson

  • Reading About Science Is Radical!

    Funded Aug 1, 2019

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your help in getting this project funded! My kids constantly have additional questions about the phenomena we learn about in class; most of the time, I myself don't have or know the answers to their deep questions! I love sending my students on quests to research and find those answers for themselves, and these non-fiction texts are going to allow them to do just that. They will also serve as great resources for us to use throughout our units to practice reading comprehension of non-fiction texts, which is crucial to their science education. I cannot wait to see the impact these books will have on their learning!”

  • Fired Up About Science! Amazon Tablets for 4th Grade Scientists

    Funded Jun 18, 2019

Your generous donation toward my project has already changed the way my students are able to interact with science on a daily basis! We can use them in so many different ways- research, review, extension activities, and so much more. The tablets are also going to allow us to use technology while being more mobile with our experiments! For example, as we learn about weathering, erosion, and deposition in our earth science unit, we'll be able to head outside with the tablets to find and take photos of real-life examples of the things we learn in class. We are extremely grateful to you!”

  • Amazon Fire Tablets for my Little Scientists!

    Funded Jan 31, 2019

Thank you so much for your generous donation toward this project! Your donation allowed me to receive 10 Amazon Fire Tablets, with cases, to be shared among the 120 students I currently serve in science class every day. My students were SO excited from the moment they saw the tablets come out of the box, and could not wait to get their hands on them. Trust me when I say that they are put to good use in our class every single day.

My students love when we use the tablets to pay group Kahoot! games to review science concepts before tests. Apps such as BrainPop, IXL, Khan Academy, and MobyMax are all also easily accessible on the tablets, and allow great opportunities for differentiated practice and extension activities. Sometimes students are able to earn special breaks in my class for all of their hard work, and the tablets are often the most sought after item!

Again, thank you for giving my students the privilege of exploring science in this new, exciting way!”

  • Opening Our Eyes to African-American Men and Women in Science

    Funded Jan 22, 2018

Words cannot begin to describe the gratitude that I have for your generous donation to my project! I never anticipated such a quick response to my request, and I also could not have guessed how much of an impact these books would have on my students!

It can be challenging, sometimes, to find adequate time to incorporate literature into the STEM classroom. However, I knew that these texts would take the simple research project that I had previously planned for Black History Month to the next level...and indeed they did! Each scholar pair was assigned a scientist or inventor from one of the books. They read the books together, taking notes along the way. They used their notes to help them complete multiple tasks from our technology curriculum; they typed up a short biographical essay on Google Docs, created their own word search, designed a beautiful wordle, and even published an online comic strip!

At the conclusion of the project, the books became part of my classroom library. My students still grab at them with enthusiasm, running up to me frequently with exciting new discoveries or connections to something we've learned in class this year. Thank you for helping me expand their minds to see how immensely important African-Americans have been, and will continue to be, in the fields of STEM.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Thompson

Ask one of my students if they know who Martin Luther King Jr. was, they'll surely say yes. The same is true of the likes of Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman. However, ask one of my students if they know who Katherine Johnson is, and you may be hit with a blank stare. Every year, black history month rolls around...and every year, the focus remains on the "big names," but black history does not end with MLK. As notable as he, Tubman, and Parks are, they are NOT the end-all-be-all when it comes to black contributions to our world. As a science teacher, it would be unjust to let my scholars leave me without opening up their eyes to the many African-American men and women who have contributed to black history through science and engineering since the start of our nation, and even prior! One way that I can do this is by expanding my classroom library with these books.
