  • Easy as A(rranging) our B(ooks) in C(ategories)!

    Funded Feb 13, 2020

This year has not ended the way any of us expected. Teachers and students packed up to go home on Friday, March 13, as we would on any other Friday. Little did we know, we would not be returning to the classroom on Monday with our students. Instead, teachers arrived at school to pack materials for what was supposed to be two weeks of stay at home, remote learning, to slow the spread of COVID-19. This stay at home was extended multiple times, culminating in 10 weeks of remote learning and 12 weeks of being out of school. Here we are at the beginning of June, wrapping up the end of the school year after never returning to the school building.

Two weeks prior to beginning the stay at home, we had returned to the classroom after February vacation and worked together to set up our new shelving. The students were eager to assemble the shelves and start moving materials to them. Our hope was to add the books for our next reading unit to the shelves for all our students to browse and access. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances described above, this did not happen.

I returned to the classroom once at the beginning of April, and instead of putting those books on the shelf, I packed them to take home to support our continued remote learning. I cannot wait until the day when I can bring those books back into my classroom, share them with my new students, and place them on the shelves where I had intended them to be all along. I am truly thankful for your support of our project and look forward to seeing it through when we are finally able to be back in the classroom with students.”

    With gratitude,

  • A Long Walk to Water: A Cross-Curricular Novel Study

    Funded Apr 16, 2018

My students will be so thrilled to hear the news that our project was funded! Thank you for the generous donations! I cannot wait to get these books in the hands of my students and begin this great work! They are already so interested in this story. In science, we have been studying the water cycle and learning about aquifers - I am excited to see the many connections they will make to this story. Thanks again!”

  • Bean Bags for Book Buffs

    Funded Jan 19, 2018

Due to some unforeseen restrictions, we were not able to stick with our original plan of bean bags. However, my students thoroughly enjoyed selecting replacement items. We choose two Gaiam Kids Balance Ball Chairs and five Gaiam Balance Discs. My class was so excited each time one of the packages arrived and they all wanted to be the first to try them out.

After a few days letting all students try out the different options, we created a rotation schedule where every three days they would have a full day of using the Balance Discs or Chairs. Not only are students using them to get comfortable and read, read, read, but they are also using them throughout the day to add a little comfort to their other studies. The Balance Discs are perfect for sitting on the floor and have the added bonus of helping strengthen the core muscles while sitting on a comfortable cushion! The Balance Ball Chairs are just the right size for our desks and the students love the option of the additional choice between these and the Balance Discs.

My class is so thankful for your generous donations and they are using them with care so that students in the future can benefit from your donations as well. We are looking forward to our next project, where I am hoping to purchase a class set of a novel we just began reading - A Long Walk to Water - so that students can make deeper connections to the text and the world around us.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Strobel

I have been working tirelessly to make sure our classroom library is full of current, high-interest books and have shared my personal love of reading with my students. Every time I bring in new books to the classroom or give a talk on a book I recently finished reading, the excitement is contagious. I began the new year with a goal of revamping the arrangement of our classroom library both in the way books are displayed and the area the students have to read. These bean bag chairs would provide my students a comfortable place to get lost in their reading.
