Traditionally, students come into their homeroom classroom and begin working on some sort of spiral review. It's intended to keep concepts taught during the school year fresh and accessible. The problem with this is, morning work is so boring! The kids who do it, don't really need it. The kids who need it, don't do it and it becomes an instant negative experience first thing every morning. Plus, if they do it, then we have to spend class time checking it, or it is time wasted. Checking morning work is even more boring-er! I'd rather have something for my students to do during homeroom that is exciting and engaging. I want them to want to be in homeroom. These brainteasers, strategy and logic puzzles, magazines, and games will be the perfect addition to our morning routine. The activities will jumpstart their brains and provide my students with opportunities for critical thinking, strategy building, and collaboration from the moment they walk in the room. The document camera provides an incredibly easy way for students to show the class what they are working on. They can put their work directly under the document camera and it is projected big enough for the entire class to see. Once their brains get a jumpstart in homeroom, they will have lots to show off in class!
