Hands-On Helpers
Funded Oct 28, 2022I’m so excited to share these materials with my eager learners! You are helping to open the wonderful world of reading to some great kids!
They are so excited to learn to read and work so hard to become strong decoders. The project that you have become a part of will cement their letter sound knowledge and give them the very best foundation possible.”

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words!
Funded Sep 2, 2019Our K/1 students are learning about story and making connections to their own lives. More importantly, they are LOVING time to delve into books and so motivated to become life-long readers!
Every day for 20 minutes students are spending time independently and with partners exploring the stories in our wordless picture books. We have seen an excitement for independent reading that we hadn't before.
In our conferences with students about their reading, we are finding that they are using background knowledge (they love to talk about the events and themes in the book), making connections, and making inferences that they wouldn't be able to do in books that require analysis of text. The conversations that they are having with classmates reflect a deep understanding of the ideas in these beautiful books. We wouldn't have been able to do this without your generosity.”

Mrs. Fussell
Growing Readers With Engaging Independent Reading
Funded Jul 28, 2019Thank you so much for your generous gift of literature to our students. Our children have become so motivated to read and discuss their reading with their peers. Research says that children should have 300 - 500 books in their classroom libraries and that they need CHOICE of reading materials. Your gift has allowed us to move toward that goal.
Everyday students have 20 minutes to read self-selected literature and additional time to respond to their reading. We conference with the students daily to support their comprehension and enjoyment of the books you bought. We help them set goals for reading volume, strategy use, and reading variety. Our students have set a goal to read 40 books or more this school year.
I have noticed a difference already this year in their reading engagement. Students are able to talk about specific books they are enjoying and are reading more in school and at home as well! I expect to see not only gains in reading scores, but gains in the number and types of books that students read. My goal is to make them LOVE reading and to make them life-long readers and thinkers. Your gift has gone a long way to helping us reach this goal.”

Growing Dendrites IS Rocket Science!
Funded Mar 27, 2018Thank you so much for your generous contribution to making teaching and learning great at Norview Elementary School. Your donation allowed us to purchase a professional book full of information about how to get learning to 'stick' for our scholars. Marcia Tate's book, Worksheets Don't Grow Dendrites helped us to infuse brain-compatible strategies to make learning fun and to maximize retention.
A group of ten teachers met this summer during vacation and took turns presenting strategies from the book. This fall we've been excited to use turn and talk structures to help students process information. We've also used a plethora of non-linguistic representations such as drama, song, art, and graphic organizers. Our teachers have made a greater effort to take learning outside of the classroom with double the field trips as last year at this time.
We have noticed that our students are excited about learning and are achieving at higher levels than they did last year. We really do appreciate you!”

This classroom project was brought to life by Ripple and 3 other donors.Hook Them With a Book
Funded Dec 19, 2014Thank you from the bottom of my heart! My kids really deserve the chance to participate in our literacy club and participate in our district Battle of the Books!
Children need an adult to steer them into the world of literacy. They learn, with guidance, that complex texts are worth the effort. With each completed book, they begin to see themselves as readers. With the books you are providing, they will be introduced to the joys of reading for fun. I hope to help each participant find the book that will "hook' them into becoming life long readers!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Fussell
