Breaking Through Boundaries-Reading to Open Our World!
Funded Nov 19, 2013Thank you all so much again for contributing money to our project to bring Scholastic magazines to our 7th grade classes! They arrived on Monday and we have used them every day since their arrival. This is already total usage time of over three hours by 70 students--valuable minutes in the lives of students needing to improve their reading levels to feel successful on high stakes tests.
Today when I announced that we would be transitioning to silent sustained reading time and that students had the choice of reading from their novel or choosing a magazine, the magazine table was immediately flooded with students wanting to choose a magazine. Reluctant readers are finding stories that appeal to them and are anxious to flip through the pages as they discover new and interesting topics and images which both broaden their understanding of the world and connect to their lives.
Of particular interest was an article from the October Action magazine about anacondas. Following the independent reading time students were excitedly comparing reactions to the giant reptiles and, without realizing it, citing important details from the text to support their observations. It was extremely encouraging to see them interested in non-fiction which has taken on massive importance since the transition to the Common Core.
We will get tremendous use out of these magazines and it makes me so happy to see students genuinely interested in reading instead of pretending to read to pass the time. Your support of this project has truly made a difference and we are all so grateful.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Sadat
Read All About it! Help Bring Non-Fiction to our Classroom!
Funded Nov 29, 2012I am writing to express my sincere gratitude regarding your donation to my 7th grade reading project.
Since receiving the magazines, students are excited about their independent reading period and even previously reluctant readers are anxious to read the non-fiction pieces. I have wanted to order these Scholastic magazines since coming to KIPP Academy in 2008 and was not able to do it on my own. Thank you for helping me to fulfill this goal.
You'll notice that my name is listed among the thank you recipients as well--when we were short $100 my students pitched in dollars, quarters, whatever they could come up with to make up the difference. They were inspired by your generosity and impressed that people who didn't personally know them would give money to the project. In addition to helping us get fantastic magazines, you taught my students a lesson in giving as well.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Sadat

Funded Dec 12, 2010My students were thrilled when they learned that our reading project request had been fulfilled. They were surprised and impressed that people who did not know us would offer money to help us get new books.
Students volunteered to help label the books and created a system so that they can be shared fairly among our 65 students. After one students finishes a book, he/she has the opportunity to recommend that book to the class and there is always an enthusiastic raising of hands to be the next reader.
Most importantly, I have seen students who were reluctant readers now excited to choose a book from our new selection. The titles are so much more relevant to their lives and they are genuinely enjoying reading.
Thank you so much again from all of us!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Sadat
