  • Gearing Up for a Great Year

    Funded Sep 16, 2023

We are immensely grateful for the generous support we received from you through Donors Choose, and the contribution from Young Sheldon on CBS, who matched donations to make this possible. The impact of these school supplies on our students has been nothing short of transformative. The moment the children laid eyes on the new materials, their excitement was palpable. Their faces lit up with joy, and the energy in the classroom was electric. This influx of supplies has not only fueled their enthusiasm for learning but has also provided them with the necessary tools to complete various projects.

Looking ahead, we are thrilled that some of these supplies will be integral to our upcoming makerspace projects. The infusion of creativity and hands-on exploration that these materials bring will undoubtedly enhance the learning experience for our students.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all the donors for making this enriching experience possible and contributing to the educational growth and joy of our students.”

  • Let's Get Squeaking

    Funded Jul 13, 2023

Thanks to your generous donations, we were able to acquire a set of Code & Go Mouse robots that have sparked a new love for learning in my technology class. The enthusiasm and joy these robots have brought to our students is simply remarkable. From the moment we opened the boxes you could see the excitement in the student's faces, and it has continued to grow as we have integrated these robots into our lessons.

I have witnessed incredible transformations in our students since the introduction of these robots. The shy children have found their voices, coming out of their shells to participate actively in the coding class activities and discussions. Students who were sometimes labeled as disruptive have become deeply engaged in completing the challenges assigned to their robots, using their creativity and problem-solving skills to overcome obstacles. It's truly inspiring to see how these robots have unlocked their potential and motivation.

Our students are not only having a blast while working with the robots, but they are also developing essential skills that will serve them throughout their lives. These robots have provided a platform for teaching problem-solving, critical thinking, if-then logic, and the importance of working collaboratively with their peers. In addition, the students are improving their communication skills, engaging in discussions about strategies and outcomes, and learning to express their ideas effectively.

I believe that your contribution has sowed the seeds for a brighter future for these young minds. Your support has allowed us to provide our students with an educational experience that extends beyond textbooks and classrooms. You are fostering a love for learning and helping to develop the thinkers, innovators, and leaders of tomorrow. Your generosity has made a meaningful and lasting difference in our students' lives.

We are truly grateful for your belief in our project and your commitment to education. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity and support.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Floyd

  • Help Make the Standards Align

    Funded Jul 23, 2021

Your donations allowed me to purchase a set of standards aligned lesson plans that would benefit my students with structured lesson plans that meet School Library Media Standards. The curriculum provided scaffolding for every grade level. This curriculum helped me to develop knowledgeable researchers of information. My students truly enjoyed every lesson taught and many of them stated the their media special was there favorite class. The kindergarteners truely enjoyed the coloring sheets that went along with the activities and asked everytime if they had another sheet to color with each lesson.

Thank you so much for your donation. After a year and a half of the unknown you have helped me to provide experiences for my students that will stick with them for a life time. Students were not able to experience the library the way they should in previous years and this has help to make the library the hub of our school. Thank you so much for your generosity.”

  • Preparing for Battle: Elementary Battle of the Books

    Funded Jul 23, 2021

Our students were ecstatic to see all of the books that were donated for Battle of the Books. They were thankful that they were able to participate in the program and be able to select the book that they wanted not what was available.

Out of the 15 books on the battle of the books list each student read between 3-4 books each and as a group we were able to read 3 books together. Some of our team members are a little shy but I have seen them open up and talk in the Battle of the Books club.

Competition is in March and they are so excited to compete with other schools in our district. Because of you donation, you have made it possible for children who love to read to have the books they need to participate and compete. The students and I are eternally grateful!”

  • Books Like Me: Own Voices

    Funded Mar 2, 2020

Thank you so much for your wonderful donations. Your donations have allowed me to put diverse books into the hands of our students. Not only have these books increase circulation in our media center, but students have been excited to see the covers of the books and appreciate seeing themselves in many of these books. This donation has contributed to our goal of bringing diverse selections to our students. As we continue to grow our library, we use these books as references to what other books and authors to explore to expand our collections. Not only are our minority students enjoying these books but also others different from the books main character really enjoy these books as well. It's nice to hear students discuss how they relate to the characters in the books and also recommending their peers to read the book as well. We continue to create diverse selections for students to instill the love of reading by choosing books with stories our students can relate to. Books that mirror students' lives help them to form their identity within the world as well as help them to connect to their home and school experiences and identities. When surveyed again our percentage increased from 48% to 60% when students were asked if they could find books that they like to read in the media center. Your donation has really made not only an impact on your library, but also our students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Floyd

  • Creative Collaborators Communicating & Thinking Critically

    Funded Jan 27, 2018

With the materials provided by your donations through DonorsChoose our students are able to engage in critical thinking skills that help them to grasp academic concepts through a different learning style. We have worked with various teachers to introduce concepts using the books "Using Makerspace for School Projects: 10 Great Makerspace Projects using..." Art, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Math. One project we did with a math class involved symmetry. The students used Lego blocks to create a figure based on how many lines of symmetry the object must have. Students then had to demonstrate where the line of symmetry is and explain how they got to this conclusion.

When the students first saw the materials they were excited but being teenagers they asked, "Where did you get this from?" I explained to the students that I created a project on DonorsChoose to request donations to receive these items for our Makerspace. The students have began to use these items during their lunch when they visit the media center.

The next steps for our Makerspace is to acquire more materials to enhance our students' learning. The hope is that more teachers will bring their students to the media center to work in the Makerspace so students can learn in a different way.

Thanks for all you have done!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Floyd

This classroom project was brought to life by The First Million Fund and 7 other donors.
The materials and supplies that I am requesting are for the Makerspace being developed in our Media Center. This new Makerspace will provide new opportunities for our students to not only meet the required learning objectives through a more hands-on and interdisciplinary approach, but it will open their minds to new possibilities and careers they had not previously considered to move them beyond current circumstances and propel them into a bright, new future. The materials donated for our Makerspace will allow our students to engage in personalized learning by exploring their own interest physically and virtually through various projects. Our Makerspace will turn knowledge into action. The plan is to create various stations where students will discover new ways of learning by taking a risk and making mistakes when developing products from Makerspace projects. When students learn through mistakes this encourages a growth mindset, helps to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. These stations will include a littleBits station where students will use modular electronics to invent, a LEGO station where students can bring STEM concepts to life, a Makey-Makey station where students can turn any object into a game controller. It is my hope that the materials received for our Makerspace through the process of designing, making, and sharing, will help our students develop self-confidence and self-awareness. Which will prepare them for the 21st-century careers they will embark on.
