My students will receive a rigorous, social justice-based literature curriculum. The funds used for this project will go entirely to books for the students that reflect a diversity of people. No matter what race, gender, sexuality, or nationality my students are, they will feel more empowered in their identities through my curriculum. My curriculum will be organized thematically, including units on immigration, the civil rights movement, coming of age, satire, environmental racism, and family structures to name a few. Books on this year's list include Street life by Victor Rios, A Raisin in the Sun, To Kill A Mockingbird, Things Fall Apart, The House on Mango Street, and selections from Salmon Rushdie. This curriculum will not only encompass literature but will also give students the tools to think critically and interdisciplinarily about the world around them.
