Mrs. Pearsall's Scrabble Game Learning Lab
Funded Nov 19, 2018Thank you for your generous donation. As a result of your generosity, we were able to purchase twelve Scrabble boards and twelve Scrabble dictionaries so that I can divide students into teams of four for this learning adventure! Due to popular demand, I have also made these board games available for students during brunch and lunch as a rainy day activity as well.
My 7th grade English students now have the opportunity to play the world famous, Scrabble Board Game, in teams of four, once a week to build their vocabulary, spelling, social and collaborative skills. The entire class plays in a Scrabble Learning Lab, where students take out their Scrabble boards and play Scrabble for 45 minutes to an hour once a week.
I wish you could all be a fly on the wall, as my students play Scrabble. They forget they are in an English class, as they interact with the board, each other, their Scrabble dictionaries, as I often have to ask them to lower their voices as their interactions can become quite animated. It is nice to see them have fun while building their vocabulary, spelling, reading and social skills.”

Discovering the World Thru Reading
Funded Nov 20, 2018I wanted to thank you all for your donations. The students were so excited to receive the Scope Magazines. The stories are relevant, full of current events both locally here in the United States and around the world. They also loved using the website and the interactive lessons that were available to them through our subscription.
So much of our reading programs are web based, so to see the students interact with their magazines. I loved hearing the chatter as they shared stories with each other and the pictures and illustrations that brought the articles to life. Many of them accessed the video clips online that accompanied some of their stories.
Even the students in my homeroom class ask me if they can read the magazines during homeroom.
I also started a chess club one day a week during lunchtime and I already have over 25 students signed up in one day!
Again, words can not express our gratitude for your generosity and your support!”

Kids Can Make A Difference!
Funded Oct 31, 2017We did it! There are no words to express how grateful I am for the support we received with for this project fundraiser. I wish you all could of seen the reaction on my students' faces when we received the shipment of our novels and the privacy boards, yesterday. Because of your support, students will be able to learn that they have a voice and can make a difference which is the theme of this inspiring novel. Each one of you is a true hero for supporting public schools and the students that attend them.
I have designed a specific lesson for each chapter in Hoot that covers specific literary elements such as voice, round and flat characters, characterization, irony, theme, dialogue, setting, protagonist, antagonist, similes, metaphors, alliteration, personification, just to name a few. Students will explore the use of these literary elements as they read and respond to the novel. The novel eventually leads to a unit on persuasive and argumentative writing.
I teach a collaborative classroom, where my students engage with each other, text, computers and other resources. With 30-35 students in each of my classes, the students often sit in close proximity, so the new privacy boards funded by this project, enables my students to take tests or work independently, without distractions.
As a culminating activity, I allow my students' with permission slips to view the movie Hoot that was adapted from the novel as we compare the media version to the text. This is an activity that the students really enjoy.
Thank you again for all your support!”
