Knowledge is Power!
Funded Sep 9, 2019Happy New Year! We made good use of the project materials you so generously donated. After visiting the Metropolitan Museum, we studied the origins of the Kongo Power Figure and drew parallels to conflict the teens face today. We are guiding the students to resolve conflict through tapping into their own cultural power.
The students have designed their own power figures and cultural symbols and are busy creating them for a curated museum walk that we will share with the whole school. I have uploaded photos of students working with the materials and two of the finished pieces so far.”

Show Them the World
Funded Dec 15, 2019I am so very grateful for your kind and generous spirit! Thanks to you, my students can have access to the internet to guide their independent inquiry into science concepts, and can use technology to share their findings on Google Slides to the whole class.
These computers can service entire classes because we divide the students into small groups. Each group researches an area of interest and shares with the rest of the class. Now each group can have their own Chromebook!”

Funded Aug 23, 2019We really appreciate the healthy snacks, Clorox wipes, anti-viral Kleenex and hand sanitizer. We haven't been in school a full month yet, and already there is a nasty bug going around. I think we were able to contain it with these supplies.
The healthy snacks have almost been depleted already, so I along with several of my colleagues will be placing new projects on Donors Choose. We have seen a skyrocketing need for healthy snacks as we have an influx of teens who are homeless, in transitional housing, or in foster care who are deprived of adequate nutrition.
One of our new 9th graders came back a consecutive day to get a packet of beef jerky. I mentioned that the first pack should have lasted a few days. He explained that he took the pack back to the shelter where his family is staying to share with his mother and siblings so they could finally have meat for dinner and enjoy a family meal together. Your generous spirit has had a real impact on our students. I can't thank you enough!”

Calculating Success
Funded May 10, 2019I appreciate your generous spirit in supplying my students with graphing calculators. They arrived just in the nick of time for the Algebra Regents, and I am happy to report that none of our students had to share calculators this time.
Also, each of the Special Education teachers have access to the calculators to use in math classes and after school tutoring. Everyone was so excited that we got brand new, state of the art graphing calculators. Our students deserve to have the same technology that affluent kids have. You have helped ensure equity for our most needy students.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

Funded Sep 7, 2018Thank you so much for your generosity! 120 students now have plenty of anti-viral Kleenex tissues for their sneezes, Clorox wipes to clean up their desks, hand sanitizer to stay germ-free, and healthy snacks to ward off growling stomachs.
When the boxes came, the students were so excited! They are not used to getting things. The tissues, wipes and sanitizer came in the nick of time because we've had a nasty virus floating around. The students are learning hygiene to try to contain the germs. The snacks are almost gone because so many of them simply do not have enough to eat each day. I think food items were the most appreciated and the most needed.
It took time to get thank you cards done. Although the students really enjoyed getting the donations, many are adverse to writing. When you look at the notes, you will see that most are struggling writers. Even the shortest notes took almost an hour to write. I promised them extra credit, and one of my girls inspired the rest by making a beautiful card with artwork on it. She has written thank you noes for Donors Choose before, but the rest had never received a donation. No one seems to give my kids things and they had no idea how to write a thank you note. Sometimes teaching must go beyond the curriculum and extend to daily living, because the kids in our neediest schools have real deprivation.”
