The ability of being able to have materials that will allow my second graders to be organize will be amazing. They will be gaining one of the most important goals of a second grader and that is independence.
Second grade is a critical grade because students are expected to become less dependent on their teachers. Independence is one of the expectations entering into 3rd grade. Students who develop organizational skills tend to exhibit self-confidence, self-awareness, and tend to be more responsible than those who are disorganized.
I have selected materials that will afford each student the opportunity to be organized independently as well as within their assigned groups. These items, which are colored coded, will also contribute to their independence, accountability and classroom management.
Second graders will learn that "Organizing is not about being tidy or throwing stuff away. It is about learning systems that provides access to the things we need to achieve our goals."
