At the beginning of the year, my students had a hard time finding a love of reading. I ended up introducing my class to a couple of graphic novels (Sidekicks by Dan Santat) and (Amulet by Kazu Kabuishi). My students started to find books that they loved after this. I saw them start to understand harder words and use them when talking to friends. I saw my students start to complain when our independent reading time had to end. Above all, I saw my students start to develop their love of reading through these graphic novels. Now, the few graphic novels I have fly off of the shelves! Since the discovery of graphic novels in my classroom, I have noticed my students discussing books a lot more. They are building their knowledge of words and using them in everyday speech. They are finding out how important reading is, and how great it can be! I am now asking for donations to build a strong graphic novel section in my library, so all of my students have plenty of books to discover and love.
