  • Second Grade Media Maniacs

    Funded Mar 4, 2014

My students were so excited when the color laser jet printer arrived to our classroom. They could not wait to set it up. The look on their faces alone was priceless as I opened the box and pulled each item out. They asked a million questions as I began to put each piece in its appropriate place. Many of them was having side conversations about what we would use the printer for and how much more beautiful our projects will look now. It made me feel extremely happy for them.

Since we were currently studying New York City Landmarks, it made sense to use the color laser jet printer to print out the landmarks in color. Each student was able to choose which landmarks they needed in order to complete their project. They were extremely excited as each photo printed out clearly and full of color. They were able to put together New York City Landmark brochures as an end project for the unit.

This color laser jet printer has made a huge difference in outcome of the brochures as well as in the outcome of the end unit project. Students enthusiastically placed each photo on the white paper. It brought NYC to life right before their very eyes. It bought joy to my heart to see the smiles on their faces. It was a project that they were proud of and t was all because of your generosity. We thank you very much for what you have done for us.”

  • Second Grade Math Masterminds of The Future

    Funded Jun 7, 2013

We are so very grateful for your generous contribution to our classroom Math center. You don't understand how much my students have benefited from the place value resources that you all have supplied. They were overjoyed with excitement and could hardly contain their enthusiasm from the minute I opened the boxes. As I took out each item I could hear squealing and clapping. The resources came at a perfect time as it coincided with the math skills and strategies that are being taught in class in the math unit. We use the place value games everyday in the afternoon. My students practically argue over who is going to play in the first round of center time. They also love the game 3 in a row because it reminds them of tic tac toe only with math facts. Because single digit math drills are important in our school, this game has particularly been helpful because students are able to have fun, practice single digit subtraction facts and learn all at the same time. Incorporating these math resources that you all have so graciously provided has motivated my students to practice and learn. My students look forward to this part of the lesson each day. Again, Thank you.”

  • Frantically Wild About Art In Second Grade

    Funded Apr 5, 2013

My students were absolutely thrilled when the boxes of art supplies was received. As I removed each art supply from the box students screeched with excitement. Many of them clapped with anticipation of getting a glimpse of the next thing that came out of the box. One of my girls said "now we are real artist with real artist supplies". It really made my heart happy because they were all so very happy.

The art supplies came at a perfect time because we just wrapped up our fairytale unit of writing. We have begun to create the props and scenery for our class play. We read the fairytale "The 3 Spinning Fairies" and we rewrote it to fit our class needs. It is entitled "The Royal Designer, Jaynisa and The Sparkly Uniforms." My students are so excited to be using the art paper and supplies that we received to create and decorate their costumes as you can see on the website.

Receiving these materials have made this Fairytale Unit come to life. To see the sparkle and glow in their little eyes is so amazing. These materials have had a tremendous positive affect on my students and how they feel about themselves and the play. We can see the play come to life as we color and decorate the props and scenery. We thank you so very much for believing in our project and we are looking forward to performing our play this week! Thank you so much!!!!!”

  • Tantalizing Second Graders Need Leveled Library

    Funded Apr 5, 2013

As soon as I was notified of our delivery, we immediately started jumping up and down with excitement. My students could not wait to rip open the boxes and sort through the books. Students were overcome with joy at the thought of reading the new books. As I read off each title that we had received, students immediately began claiming titles that they wanted to read first. Each student much as yelled out at least 5 titles apiece. I was overcome with happiness for my class. It literally bought tears to my eyes. I had to step back and take a moment to compose myself.

Immediately, we began to sort the books and place them into baskets according to subject area, genre and/or activity. We are using the books during independent reading, literature circles, small group instruction and during buddy reading. The girls are especially enjoying the Junie B collection and have already began to list which titles they will read in order. The boys are especially excited about the graphic novels that we received and are discussing creating their own graphic novel as a literature response. Some of them have begun creating comic strips as a literature response as well.

Having these books have really boosted our energy level to learn. We are all very excited to have a new leveled library with a variety of titles. At the end of they year it is always tough to keep the motivation level high especially when the resources are low. You have rejuvenated learning for us all and for that we are truly grateful!!! Thank you all so much for funding our projects!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Umbarger

My students are 7 and 8 year olds that live in an urban setting in NY. They are learning new things and developing a passion for education through literature, writing, math and art. It is important for me as an educator to seize the moments to peak their curiosity, encourage inquiry and and inspire imagination. They are like sponges, wanting to learn about everything and anything so they can share with each other new things. Inside of our classroom is a new world waiting to open up their minds and their hearts to what wonderful things await them through learning and getting an education.
