Funded Feb 8, 2023Thank you again for donating to this project! Reading and retelling stories is a favorite in our class and the addition of these books has provided opportunities for students to interact with our unit texts outside of shared reading time.
Typically, we have a focus before reading and answer questions about the text, provide wonderings, make connections, figure out the problem, and so much more. These books have provided the students, especially my quiet and/or shy friends, and opportunity to get an up close look into the books. They sometimes notice items in photographs or illustrations that I missed.
Two of their favorites are, "Officer Buckle and Gloria," and "Jamaica's Blue Marker". We read about Officer Buckle during our Community Helper unit and the kids LOVE the dog Gloria and her antics! Another unit text is, "Jamaica's Find," students make lots of connections and empathize with the main character. When I saw another book with the beloved character I had to get it. Jamaica's marker caused students to think about others and their feelings. We enjoy reading EVERY DAY and students having access to texts outside of the unit has been amazing!”
With gratitude,
