Our school was built in the 1940's to accommodate about 450 students and now accommodates almost 900 students, with 98% of them qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Most of my kindergarten students are English Language Learners and come to school not knowing any English. When they are introduced to learning and exploring using the computer via the SMART board, their eagerness to learn is evident. My students do not have the opportunity to learn and explore using technology because their parents are unable to provide for technology, struggling daily with trying to just keep a roof over their families' heads. The majority of my students live in subsidized housing, multi-family homes, weekly rental hotels, foster care, and many are also homeless. Our school's version of updates come in the form of adding additional modular classrooms where our playground once was. Despite these challenges, kids use what they have to learn as much as they possibly can with smiles on their faces!
