I am in need of books that are of "high interest" to my Kindergarteners. They have opportunities to read stories on their level. I would like for them to be able to listen to entertaining stories for enjoyment as well. I do read-alouds for my class. Research shows that when books are read to children, they are motivated to read. I notice that after I read them a story, they will get the book. They will play teacher and read it to each other or they will "read" it during reading center time. Reading to children improves their information processing skills, vocabulary, and comprehension. They learn intonation and how to use punctuation. They learn how to use language to make sense of the world. Listening and looking at books targets the skills of both audio and visual learners.
