As a media specialist, it has been my ongoing mission to increase book circulation and student access in the library. This is the first time in over ten years that the school has created funding for a full-time media specialist. Due to the lack of full-time funding, the library is "bare bones" and lacking child centered curb appeal. In the In the past, various laminated signs were used help direct students towards various areas of the library and assist students with finding the books that they need. Unfortunately, these signs are dated, incorrect, and inconsistent. Overall, the space is not kid friendly and lacks the aesthetics to promote reading.
This project will be a large undertaking, and I would love to develop consistent signage in order promote literacy and create a student friendly learning environment. This tool could also help create book labels, bin labels, and other labels that I would otherwise have to buy.
This project could benefit students beyond the Media Center, as I would be happy to train other teachers in the building about how to use the software and machine to create their own signs and labels as needed to help students. We would also use this machine for student passion/genius hour projects or other school-related projects in our newly created maker space.
One key aspect of my curriculum is teaching students how to utilize a library, both in and outside of a school. Consistent and clear signage helps students learn these skills and find the books they need. When students are more likely to find what they need, they are more likely to check out books from the Media Center and improve their literacy skills – thus my wish for improved signage in our Media Center!
