Without these computers, I am unable to play to the strengths of my students and allow them to find culturally relevant articles for debates or music and pictures for the google presentation that accompanies their poetry skits. The technology will be used to bring lessons to life and engage all students as we prepare them for the Regents. More importantly, these computers will allow students with disabilities and English Language Learners access to audiobooks and resources they need to comprehend core texts. When we encounter difficult vocabulary or a literary concept that is challenging, I can pull up visuals and translate definitions for students without singling them out. These computers will help keep our classroom inclusive of all learners so we can build together. School-wide, we are implementing Google Classroom, but many students do not have access to a computer or have to share a laptop with their parents who use it for school. As educators we try and prepare kids for the real world and college, but how can we do that if they never get the chance to experience Google Classrooms, Google Docs or search the internet for credible sources that are not hand printed for them by a teacher? Students need to practice these skills early and often or we are not preparing them for college or the responsibility and grit it takes to work with technology in a positive and academic setting.
