At the beginning of the year the overwhelming majority of my students hated reading! My goal for them is to create a learning environment where they would enjoy reading and get lost reading a book that have fallen in love with while receiving research based, differentiated small group instruction.
By generously donating to the funding of this project, you will help these students work towards becoming strategic, lifelong readers thus improving academic achievement.
During reading workshop, I meet with each of my four, flexible groups which were created using MAP data. Each group receives a new book introduction, time to read, and an opportunity for “snapshot” listening, higher order questioning, and guided problem solving practice. Later during the week, the groups reconvene for me to assess the strategic processing of text using running records. Conferences are held with each student to allow for feedback on strategies that are being used well and those that need improvement. In order to implement this type of small group instruction effectively and free from distraction, the guided reading model supports the use of a table where a small groups can meet quietly free from disturbance. The, ESL, SPED students, reluctant readers, and those who have attention disorders struggle to focus and need constant redirection. Wiggle pads will allow them to release excess anxiety or frustration while allowing them to focus on the task at hand- learning effective research based reading strategies! The result? Engaged, strategic readers!
