Drumming Up Fitness
Funded Jan 1, 2018Thank you so much for your financial support of our "Drumming Up Fitness" project. You have truly turned Virginia Avenue Charlotte DeHart Elementary School's music and PE department's dream into reality. We appreciate your continued support of our students.
As students entered the classroom, eyes lit up, curiosity sparked, and engagement in lessons was immediate. Our students experienced a full body and mind workout while learning elements of music such as rhythm patterns, drumming techniques, and steady beat. There are so many elements of music that can be explored using the fitness drumming. It also is exercising the entire body and making exercise fun for kids.
In the near future, our older students will begin to create their own fitness drumming routines by combining various rhythm patterns. It will also be an incredible lesson in teamwork as they will be designing these routines with a small group. Then they will be able to teach their classmates the routines they have created. Our younger students will continue to work on hand/eye coordination and a better understanding of steady beat and body awareness.
Thank you again for your support!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Harrison
Ready, Set, Play the Orff Way!
Funded Sep 29, 2016Virginia Avenue Charlotte DeHart Elementary School students and staff are thrilled to be using brand new Orff instruments in the music classroom. Our larger music classes no longer need to double up on instruments as we learn new musical selections. In the spring, we will be able to establish a brand new Orff ensemble for our students to further explore music on a performance level.
When the boxes first arrived, our eyes lit up with excitement (especially mine). It was Christmas in October. Students were "oohing" and "ahhing" over the amount of large boxes in the office and music room. All students are so grateful to be playing on brand new instruments. We even featured our newest drums in a play based upon the book, "Drum Dream Girl". Our drum dream girls used the drums as we acted out the story.
Our next project in our music classes is to introduce recorders to our 4th graders in addition to the Orff xylophones. I would also love to own a class set of ukuleles to begin teaching our younger students another instrument. Thank you so much for your generosity. Virginia Avenue students and staff are so grateful!”
