Mathematics can be a significant struggle for any student but students at our school often do not have the family support to progress their learning, so they rely solely on their teachers for instruction. In my experience teaching both with and without a Surface tablet, students learn more effectively and are more engaged when a teacher uses one. It is a powerful teaching tool to be able to show students problems in PowerPoint slides displayed on a projector, and have students see step-by-step how the problem is worked out with simultaneous verbal instruction. Currently, I work problems out that are projected on a white-board but part of the learning experience is lost because I have to stand in the way of the writing and then move aside so students can see. My verbal instructions have to come after I’ve already done the work. My students will often have a much harder time understanding what I’ve done when I have to go back and explain it, rather than when they can see it first-hand. Pear Deck is also an amazing formative assessment tool that works great on the Surface. Currently if I want to use Pear Deck, I have to stay at my desk, which is distant from my students, in order to check student responses. With a Surface, I can circulate the room and discuss students’ responses, providing them immediate feedback on their work. This is a powerful way to enhance their learning experience. A Surface would also allow me to use our Chromebook monitoring software to ensure students are on-task, while away from my desk. This would give me better access to helping students and still ensure they are using their technology appropriately. Overall, the Surface is an amazing tool that would provide tremendous educational value to my class!
