  • Re-Awakening Yup'ik Culture Through the Visual and Performing Arts

    Funded Dec 28, 2021

The materials provided for our project

"Re-Awakening Yup'ik Culture Through the Visual and Performing Arts" ended up being of great support to the students at Emmonak School. Because we received the materials late and the administration was not fully on board with the intended project at first, we were able to utilize the materials to support our Speech and Language students in Elementary(k-6th) in their daily Zoom lessons as well as working with our SPED students with multi-sensory support in Reading. Students created academic songs to sing on the karaoke machine. Our students who are shy really benefited from the support of the karaoke machine and gained confidence in speaking.

When our students first saw the materials, they were very excited. They wanted to pick up and work with all of the materials simultaneously. Of course, that was not possible, however, the students were very creative with the ways they found to utilize the materials.

The next step is to utilize the materials in the way originally stated with students in middle and high school to increase focus on the Arts and the importance of the Arts in supporting academia in the classroom setting. many Thanks to our supporters!!!”

  • Literary Center: Cultivating Cultural Captivation Among Middle School Yupik (Eskimo)Adolescents

    Funded Oct 25, 2018

Thank you immensely for the materials sent to my students. As you can see by the pictures, they enjoy utilizing the reading language and U.S. History materials for learning. On Fun Friday's, we typically play the games as a class for the last hour of the day. Students are able to work with independent games with peers after completing assignments during the week. Our gratitude is beyond words. Thanks to individuals like you, my students are learning the English language through continuous practice with the Scrabble, Boggle and Bingo games of synonyms and homonyms. My 7th and 8th graders who tend to find everything boring enjoy learning through the game format and no longer complain. Thank you from the Yup'ik Tribe!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Williamson

My middle school students are village hunters, fishers and gatherers; Yupik subsistence caretakers of the land. They must realize and value their culture again. The purpose of the classroom cultural literacy center is to highlight reading and history as the key to the rebuilding of a strong culture for children in the LYSD, AK., in a self-directed environment with structured modeling. With elders and community members in tandem, providing an environment of strong cultural immersion will increase cohesion, psychological and academic growth and spiritual healing of a community and native people.
