One of our rising 3rd grade scholars unfortunately suffered severe hearing loss at birth. To participate in daily activities she wears hearing aids on both ears and adults with which she interacts wear FM units to communicate. The FM units connect to her hearing aids wirelessly and act as a microphone for the speaker. We're doing everything in our capacity to help our scholar hear more clearly. Similar to using earbuds when talking on a cell phone, the FM units can pick up background noise. While the purpose of the FM units is to bring the speaker's voice "closer" to her, this background noise is a major interference. Her classmates are aware of the challenges and are extremely compassionate; they keep their "sounds off" when anyone is addressing the class - not only to show respect to the speaker, but to ensure our scholar can hear as well as possible. The FM units are sometimes passed around to other scholars if there is a class discussion to ensure our scholar can fully participate. Although we are taking every step to aid our scholar, we can't avoid the sound chairs make against the floor when scholars move their seats. Our focus scholar is in two classrooms throughout the day and we would love to get chair socks for each seat in both classes. Please help us continue to provide the full academic experience for our scholar. When she can participate fully, all her classmates benefit, because they enjoy having her as a part of daily discussions and routines.
