  • Emotional Regulation in the Classroom: Using Sensory Tools

    Funded Jul 20, 2021

The new sensory and regulation tools for our school have had a huge positive impact for our students. So far, only two weeks into the school year our students have found a benefit from the bean pod we placed in our sensory room and the pop it sensory tools while they're in class. More specifically, we have a brand new student to us who is using the wobble cushions and a pop it every single day in every classroom. We were given enough tools that he can carry with him around the building, previously we only had a few so they were specifically assigned to each class. Our student now has the option to keep this with him and help him all day.

The sensory sox bag was used the first day we had it by an elementary student. Previously he used our older one, but it was so stretched out and wouldn't stay closed that it wasn't as helpful as it could have been. The new sox provided strong vestibular output for our student and gave him the pressure he needed during dysregulation. The most beneficial tool used thus far was the new deep pressure sensory top! A young student has extreme difficulties with dysregulation and recently shared that he enjoys nurturing touch and deep pressure massage. The vest instantly provided these feelings for this student and he wears it daily and has had great success! We were given enough light covers to cover every light in our sensory room and social work office! The ambiance has been noticed by all and greatly appreciated by staff and students. These rooms are more calming and help with regulating their emotions when their motors are running high.

Every classroom was given a set of noise cancelling headphones, elementary received a few more, and they now have easy access to headphones that fit appropriately and actually soften outside noises. So many of our students struggle with focus and attention, these headphones are already being used! It is great to have headphones that stay the size they are formed to and do not fall apart when taken off, which was our norm for years.

Recently I was able to assist a young elementary student help regulate their emotions and body by using the weighted dog lap pad. This student has a lot going on at home and he is not receiving adequate amounts of sleep at night. He is struggling to stay focused and awake at school. He was given time to rest recently, but was uneasy napping at school. Despite the weighted blanket that wasn't enough for him. I gave him the dog lap pad and he instantly snuggled with it and rested comfortably for a couple of hours. He looked and felt so much better after waking up. Without that weighted lap pad I am confident that the student would not have rested peacefully, resulting in more emotional and behavioral outbursts.

I truly cannot express how much your support has meant to our school! Thank you for your support and love during this school year!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. White

  • Positive Behavior Incentives

    Funded Oct 24, 2019

Our students have benefited for many months from the items that were delivered. The students enjoy the snacks, drinks, school supplies, etc that were donated. Our school store has been stocked for a long time thanks to the generous donations from Donors Choose.

The healthy snack foods and gatorade drinks were great choices to help keep our students healthy while still treating themselves. They earn coupons for the store by displaying positive behaviors throughout the day. When staff notice students doing good they reward them with coupons that they use to then purchase big or small ticket items weekly.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. White

We are currently working to build our sensory room into a full functioning area for our students to help them regulate their emotions with the use of sensory swings, flexible seating, textured walls, filtered lights, and movement breaks. Many of our students have traumatic pasts and toxic stress. When they are in a dysregulated state they are unable to use executive functioning skills to regulate their emotions. The use of the sensory room allows them to calm their bodies and minds; ultimately helping them regulate their emotions and make positive choices. Please help us purchase a textured wall and bean pod seating for our students to have calming options when they are dysregulated.
