Thank you so much for your generosity! I can't wait to order more reading resources that will help my students become more confident readers. They work so hard each day and deserve to have the best resources at their fingertips. Thank you again for your contribution to my students and me.”

  • Teachers Are Students, Too!

    Funded Sep 16, 2019

Thank you again for donating to my Donors Choose project, which allowed me to attend the Orton-Gillingham reading training. This truly was the most beneficial training that I have ever attended in my 20 years of teaching.

The day that I got back from my training I began implementing the teaching strategies that I learned with my students. They all knew I had been a "student" the previous week and they were so excited to try all the new tips, tricks, and strategies that I had learned.

Orton-Gillingham is based on a multi-sensory approach to teaching reading so that students learn with their eyes, ears, and hands. One of the most popular strategies is the auditory/kinesthetic approach to naming letters and corresponding sounds. I say a sound and then my students write the corresponding letter in sand while saying the corresponding sound, which stimulates the brain helping them to remember the sounds and letters better. They just love this activity and ask me each day if we are going to "use the sand." Seeing my students' enthusiasm has reiterated to me how beneficial attending this training was. Thank you again for your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Averett

I am requesting funds to attend a 5-day comprehensive training in Nashville, Tennessee that provides an in-depth understanding of the Orton-Gillingham methodology, focusing primarily on phonological awareness and phonics (along with encoding and decoding). We will also learn how to teach fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension using the OG philosophy of multi-sensory, sequential, direct instruction. Orton-Gillingham is a highly structured approach that breaks reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds, and then building on these skills over time. It also was the first approach to use multi-sensory teaching strategies to teach reading, which is considered extremely effective for teaching students with dyslexia. This means using sight, hearing, touch, and movement to help students connect and learn the concepts being taught. By attending this training I hope to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to help all of my students become effective readers, writers, and spellers. Not only would my current students directly benefit from the knowledge I would gain from this training, but my future students would as well. I would also be able to share the techniques and strategies from this training with my colleagues, who in turn, would be able to use them with their students.
