Every child is an artist. I believe that is my responsibility as a teacher to provide opportunities that nurture my students' innate creativity. Effective facilitation of these opportunities requires materials that are not supplied by my district and are beyond my personal means to provide. The A in STEAM - art - provides young learners with the opportunity to access new information and serves as a vehicle through which their understanding of that information can be creatively demonstrated. In my classroom, artistic expression is very evident. Students choose media such as model magic, liquid watercolors, Crayola markers and do a dot markers to independently represent their conceptual understanding of information. For example, students could choose to use model magic to create a sculpture of an animal that she/he researched and then visited during a field trip to the zoo. This sculpture could then be painted using the liquid watercolors. It is my intention to set up the loom as a center option that can be chosen by students who are interested in engaging in the process of weaving. Students' efforts will be scaffolded by me based on the amount of support each child needs. This will serve as a means of creative expression while also helping students develop fine motor skills. This process could also assist students to self-regulate behavior and encourage the development of skills related to executive functioning. The wood pieces and beads will be available for students to use as they see fit. The use of these items is limited only by the students' imaginations. It is likely that some of these items will be used to support students' development in the area of literacy through a guided activity related to the process of creating a bracelet or necklace that represents the name of each child.
