(The following message was written while working in another school district; an edited message will be forthcoming!) More than half of the students in my school receive free or reduced lunches, and are unable to purchase basic school supplies, much less a graphing calculator that costs over $100. I'm fortunate to have a Smart Board in my classroom, and I use graphing technology for class demonstrations. The concepts would be so much more meaningful if the students could be engaged at their desks with graphing technology. They learn by doing! My ultimate goal is to build a class set of 30 graphing calculators so that each student can have one to use. My initial goal with this project is to collect a set of 5, and I will separate the class into groups so that each group will have a calculator during class activities.
