In addition to learning English as a second language, my students have also been identified as students with special needs in the area of speech and language. This means that communication is even more challenging for them. Not only are they learning English in addition to their home language they are learning written language as well. Using concrete materials helps my students visualize concepts that are difficult to comprehend. One way to teach skills is through storytelling. Many students come from cultures where storytelling is the primary method of instruction. I would like to teach my students concepts through storytelling using visual materials that will help them be proficient communicators so they can make progress with their academic skills in the areas of reading, speaking and writing.
