I’ve decided that this is going to be the year I incorporate flexible seating in to my classroom, with multiple seating options that allow my kids to choose to work at different heights and in different positions.
There has been considerable research done on the benefits of students being able to move around in a classroom. Movement increases the heart rate, breaks up the static sitting they are used to for seven periods a day, and enables them to not only engage in learning but potentially even be excited about it!
I want to offer my kids a place to stand in the back and work, without it being awkward and seem like a punishment. I want them to be able to sit but still be able to move around on a activity stool, allowing them to get out their restless energy while staying engaged in the lesson. I want to create an environment where it’s not possible for kids to fall asleep because they are always moving. But I can’t do these things without your help!
