My students have not had access to books since the first week of March. Libraries are closed and families are unlikely to spend money on books with so much financial uncertainty. Since school has been canceled for the remainder of the year, this "book loss" will extend to a full FIVE MONTHS. That is almost half a year without regular access to books. My students love to read. It brings them joy, connects them to the world, and provides an escape when emotions are stretched to breaking. I would love to gift each child with a special delivery of books they personally want to read, books they can read with their families, books to keep them going through this feels-like-forever period of staying home and not seeing their friends. Books as an alternative to the endless video games they will inevitably turn to. Children need books, to have and to hold, through good times and bad. Stories have such value, not only for the entertainment they offer but for brain development and educational growth. The best part is, students, don't even realize their brains are working when they are reading a great book. It's an educational sneak attack! I have selected 6 books for each child that I know they can read and will love. They are engaging, motivating, thought-provoking, and just plain funny. My students would be thrilled to have them as their own. And I would be thrilled to be able to provide them with such a special gift before they head into summer.
