  • K Coin Shop

    Funded Dec 18, 2024

We are deeply grateful for your generous donations, which have significantly enhanced our school store experience. The Horizon students are highly motivated to earn K-coins and eagerly anticipate their weekly shifts at the store. Each month, new roles are assigned, providing students with opportunities to develop various skills. Through their involvement, they have been working on initiating and maintaining conversations, understanding personal space, practicing patience, and taking turns.

Our school store operates under the guiding principle of the Golden Rule: treating others as one wishes to be treated. This philosophy is integrated into our curriculum, fostering empathy, respect, and kindness among students. By running the store, students not only gain practical experience in customer service and teamwork but also engage in social skills development. They learn to collaborate effectively, resolve conflicts, and communicate respectfully, all while reinforcing the importance of kindness and mutual respect in their daily interactions.”

    With gratitude,

Ms. Danielle, MaryRose, Alyssa, Samantha, Cameron, Nicolette

  • Danielle's Speech Students

    Funded Sep 30, 2020

Thank you so much for your generous donations. My students have been thriving by utilizing the items that were bought with your donations. I have laminate paper to last me the rest of the year. The kids are loving the toys. We are able to give them the voice that they need to communicate whether that is through use of a switch, pictures or a device. You have allowed me to provide the best care that they all deserve. I have also used the chewy tubes and this has allowed some kids to not put objects in their mouth and improve their feeding skills. Again, thank you so much for your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

Ms. Danielle, MaryRose, Alyssa, Samantha, Cameron, Nicolette

This classroom project was brought to life by The DonorsChoose Community and 6 other donors.
These materials will allow my students to learn to communicate and give them a voice. For example a switch allows a child to hit the button and a toy is then activated. This is the first step to utilizing an assistive device to communicate. A lot of my therapy is play based because kids learn best through play. They are also more motivated through play. I included some feeding resources. A lot of my students are failure to thrive due to low weight. They have difficulty managing certain foods because of oral motor weakness.
