  • Ignite a Love for Reading for Struggling Readers

    Funded Jan 17, 2012

    You all have brought such joy to my classroom and have sparked a new love of reading with my students. The addition of the Kindle Fire has transformed our small group time. Students are especially eager to help their peers who have flash cards to study and those struggling readers are no longer ashamed that they have to learn their high frequency words. With the Kindle, students don't know what the other is practicing and that is huge for the self esteem in my classroom! I can now have some of my gifted students reading challenging selections, such as The Hunger Games, to my non-readers exploring picture books.

  • Love Science? With Your Support My Students Can!

    Thank you so much for believing in the importance of teaching science! We are having a blast during our science period! The students and I are eagerly awaiting our shipment of ants and butterfly larva so we can we can begin our life science unit. The bingo games were a hit because it is helping my students, who are mostly english language learners, to learn key vocabulary in an engaging environment. Today we explored the properties of magnetism and you should have heard the squeals of excitement to be able to feel the force of two magnets repelling!

  • Instill the Love of Reading in Our Future Leaders!

    Words can not express the gratitude myself and my students have for all of you! Your generous donations have transformed a lack luster bookshelf to a bright and colorful reading oasis. My students are begging for time to spend reading leisurely or even practicing their fluency on the bean bag chairs. I know it is because of this project that my students are finding the joy of reading!

    In the beginning, the students were mesmerized with the materialistic things; the new chairs, books, bins, especially the awesome rug - but soon they brought up the fact that many of you are complete strangers to this class and that they do not want to disappoint you all! What a wonderful experience this has been to my class and myself!

I am advocating for them by thinking outside of the traditional classroom setup and making their intervention experience as innovative as possible. Most of my students come from homes that unfortunately can not provide them with access to technology, even the public library is too far away to walk to. This plea for technology will give my students what LAUSD hasn't been able to - working technology in the classroom!
