I am the media specialist at a Title I school in rural North Carolina. We are Title I because well over half of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Because we are a Title I school, we receive federal funds which others do not. However, most of our Title I funds go towards two teachers' salaries so that we can have smaller class sizes. Therefore, we really don't get to use any of these funds for some of the basic materials that the students and teachers need. We also have a very high population of ESL students, meaning that their first language is something other than English. This puts yet another challenge into many areas of our school.
