My students need books that are of high interest to them but are at a reading level that matches their abilities so we can foster a culture that encourages reading. The few books we have in our room are donated and well loved but do not respect the needs of their high school age. By expanding our library, we will be able to read literature that respects both the age of the reader and the allow the students to read at a level that is both comfortable yet challenging. We will use the books in independent instructional reading tasks to help supplement our current curriculum. The books will also be available to the students to read during their free choice time during recreation and leisure, passing periods, and lunch. I will also read books just beyond their abilities to help facilitate a guided reading experience. The reading games will be utilized both during free time and during class reward time to set up fun activities where students can practice their reading in a fun and practical way with their peers.
When my students learn to improve their reading abilities their world of possibilities will be expanded beyond entry level jobs and take them into life long careers. As Dr. Seuss says "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go!" Please help my students go BIG places! We appreciate you reading about our dreams.
