I teach in a Title I school in South Carolina. 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Around 30% of our students come from non-English speaking homes, which puts them at a disadvantage when learning to read and write. Most of our students' families also lack the resources to provide books and other educational supplies for their children to use at home. Despite their economic disadvantages, my students are eager to learn how to read and write! They love experiencing new texts that they can read at school and take home to share with their families. My students enjoy reading and I want to ensure that they will continue to read and learn throughout their lives.
