Our school has been 100% virtual since last March. However, we will begin our transition back to in–person learning within the coming weeks. All technology funding was focused on much needed student devices. I was thankful enough to use my personal device while teaching from home. Virtual learning has brought on many issues that we have not faced before. Who would have thought I would need my device to run videos, Google Suite programs, and document programs all at once?! The successful operation of these platforms is vital to my students’ success. As I prepare to embark on a new phase of education, known was hyflex or concurrent teaching, I cannot bring my home device into the classroom. I will be teaching part of my class in-person and simultaneously teaching virtually via Zoom. Unfortunately, district-issued teacher laptops are not as reliable as we would like them to be. The only laptops left in the building are outdated, slow, and have broken cameras or microphones. While on Zoom, my students need to be able to see my screen in order to deliver quality content and instruction. In addition, we share social emotional and mindfulness videos to help ease the stress of pandemic learning. These things are not possible with my district provided technology when I return to the classroom in mid-March. The success of my students depends on me having dependable, updated, and compatible technology to support their learning. With a new laptop, I would be able to cut out wait time and frozen faces on Zoom.
