Funded Dec 10, 2015Thank you so much for your donations! My students were so excited and enthralled to receive a gigantic box filled to the brim with new books for our room. They have been eating them up, one after another, ever since the shipment came in. In our classroom reading is held to the highest standard. They are required to read a total of one hour a day, but many of them read so much more. They are always eager to share with their classmates and their teacher how much they read, and what they read about. It is great to see.
Teaching reading is not just about breaking up and sounding out words. It is about understanding what they are reading (comprehension). This can be as simple as answering who is the character in the story, or more difficult like finding foreshadowing through clues the author gives. Comprehension is built from the child reading on their level and being taught metacognition, or thinking about their thinking. The more a child has available to read, that is on their level, and they are interested in, the more their comprehension grows and flourishes. That is where you donations helped our class. It bought a large amount of high-interest books for my students to get invested in, which in turn helps their reading. Thank you!”

Funded Oct 29, 2015Let me start off by saying thank you so much for your generous donations to our classroom! When the two big boxes came to our room my students were so excited to open them and find out what was inside. I told them it was materials given to us by donor's choose and that sparked their interest even more. That day when they were at lunch I unpacked and sorted the materials into their two categories: center materials and indoor recess games. When they got back I gave them a preview of all the awesome materials we received and they were grinning ear to ear.
We have been using the math and literacy games during centers. In small groups the students play the games based on the skill we are working on in the class room. We just finished a topic in math about adding 2 digit numbers to 2 digit numbers. One of our new math games was perfect for it. It has two spinner that landed on numbers and the students need to use the work-mats that come with the game to solve the addition problems. That game will also come in handy when we move on to 2 digit subtraction.
The games for indoor recess have been put to good use. They love stacking up Jenga, playing charades, and solving mysteries with clue. These games have been good lessons in following directions, working together, and winning graciously. They are having a blast!
Thank you again for helping our classroom. My students love to learn, and these materials are teaching a wide variety of academic and social skills that will positively impact their lives.”
